Being a Mentor

An EMS ConnectME Mentor is a member of the EMS agency who serves as a core role model for Learners throughout the hands-on portions of the program. Each Learner will have at least one dedicated Mentor who guides them through the program.

Mentor responsibilities include:

  • Planning, teaching, and supervising program activities and trainings.
  • Demonstrating good mental health awareness, boundaries, and self-care for Learners.
  • Working closely with the Instructor of Record, service leadership, and other Mentors.
  • Documenting Learner participation and hours, and signing-off on their skills.
  • Recruiting new Learners by speaking to local classes and representing EMS ConnectME positively in the community.
  • Assisting in the decision to allow a Learner to advance to Level 2.
  • Ensuring the Learner’s wellbeing before, during, and after EMS calls and other potentially stressful events. This includes having an after-action review with the Learner after every EMS call that they go on.
  • Completing MEFIRS documentation for EMS ConnectME every time a Learner goes on an EMS call.

To be eligible to be a Mentor, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older,
  • Have worked at the agency for at least 6 months,
  • Hold a valid, non-expired Maine EMS license at the EMT level or above, AND
  • Want to be a Mentor.

Becoming a Mentor:
